I think if someone hits two different "good attempt but there is a better solution" variations on one problem, he should have the option to change the problem to unrated.

..or allow the user to set the result as a draw when this happens and adjust the grade as appropriate

I agree. After say three Good Attempts the recommended solution should be provided and no change to grade should be made. I always want to know the best solution but often have to make weak moves to get out of the loop and as a consequence my grade drops.
