Graphical representation of material imbalance

In the graphic interface there is an indicator for material imbalance left of the chessboard. It shows the pieces and pawns which one side misses in comparison to the other.

It is great to have such a feature, but the current implementation looks somewhat illogical to me. Suppose black has an extra pawn. This is indicated by a white pawn at the "white" side of the board. I find this quite misleading, however. I would find more logical to either show captured white material at the "black" side of the board, or use the system implemented, say, in Arena Chess GUI, where white pawn at the "white" side of the board indicates an extra, and not a missing pawn for white.

Or is it only me, who finds the current convention misleading?
